Casa de la Vila: A historical jewel in Barcelona

The Casa de la Vila, also known as the Sant Andreu de Palomar Town Hall, is one of the most emblematic buildings in the Plaza de Orfila in Barcelona. Its history and architecture captivate visitors, making it a must-visit place for tourists looking to immerse themselves in the history and culture of the city.

A past of solidarity during the Civil War

After the outbreak of the Civil War, the Casa de la Vila witnessed one of the most supportive acts of the time. English and American Quakers organized to send economic and humanitarian aid to cities affected by the war. In Sant Andreu, the City Council gave up the ground floor of the municipal building to install a canteen that would be of great importance for thousands of disadvantaged children.

The Casa de la Vila canteen stood out for being one of the few to have an automatic milk machine. In it, volunteers from the neighborhood were in charge of cleaning, preparing breakfasts and distributing vegetables, milk and soap to mothers with babies and children who came to this place in search of help. The work of the Quakers was invaluable in ensuring the proper nutrition and growth of an entire generation of children affected by the consequences of the war.

A historic and emblematic headquarters

The current headquarters of the Sant Andreu District was built in 1842 on the foundations of the old Sant Andreu de Palomar Town Hall. After a fire during the September Revolution in 1870, the building was rebuilt and expanded in 1915, adding a body with a façade to Malats Street, thus acquiring its current appearance.

Today, the Casa de la Vila continues to fulfill its function of housing the offices and administrative services of the Sant Andreu district, but it has also become an important point of tourist and cultural interest in the city of Barcelona.< /p>
