Khanty-Mansiysk is the center of Khantia-Mansia in the Urals region of Russia. Khanty-Mansiysk (Russian: Ха́нты-Манси́йск, tr. Khánty-Mansíysk, lit. Khanty-Mansi Town, Khanty: Ёмвоҷ, Yomvoḉ, Mansi: Абга, Abga) is a city and the administrative center of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia. It stands on the eastern bank of the Irtysh River, 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) from its confluence with the Ob, in the oil-rich region of Western Siberia. Though an independent city, Khanty-Mansiysk also functions as the administrative center of the Khanty-Mansiysky District. It was known as Ostyako-Vogulsk until 1940.
Khanty-Mansiysk is one of the few administrative centers of a federal subject in Russia that is not the largest in the territory - the city of Surgut surpasses it in size within the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Population: 80,151 (2010 Census), 53,953 (2002 Census), 34,462 (1989 Census).
