Niamey

Welcome to Niamey!

Niamey, the capital of Niger, is a lively, fairly modern city of around 1.3 million (2020) on the banks of the Niger River in the Tillaberi region in the far southwest of Niger. It is the administrative, cultural and economic hub and hence generally offers good facilities for travelers, both budget and upmarket. Niamey offers unique open-air markets that are great for people watching, they’re patronized by members of the Tuareg, Sonuri, and Fulani tribes, as well as wrestling, one of the finest museums in Africa, and the massive Grand Mosque.

Niamey is the capital and largest city of Niger. Niamey lies on the Niger River, primarily situated on the east bank. Niamey's population was counted as 1,026,848 as of the 2012 census. As of 2017, population projections show the capital district growing at a slower rate than the country as a whole, which has the world's highest fertility rate. The city is located in a pearl millet growing region while manufacturing industries include bricks, ceramic goods, cement, and weaving.
