Semey (Kazakh: Семей), formerly known as Semipalatinsk (Russian: Семипала́тинск, until 2007) and Alash-kala (Kazakh: Алаш-қала / Alaş-qala, 1917–1920), is a city in Kazakhstan with population of around 300,000 people.

Semey (Kazakh: Semeі, Cyrillic: Семей), until 2007 known as Semipalatinsk (Russian: Семипала́тинск) and in 1917-1920 as Alash-kala (Kazakh: Алаш-қала, Alaş-qala), is a city in eastern Kazakhstan, in the Kazakh part of Siberia. It lies along the Irtysh River near the border with Russia, 1,000 kilometers (620 mi) north of Almaty and 700 kilometers (430 mi) southeast of the Russian city of Omsk. Its population is 299,264 (2009).
