Welcome to Sogndal!

Sogndal is a small but important town in Sogn og Fjordane. Sogndal is the regional center of the Sognefjord area with a handful of hotels and a couple of restaurants. The town was originally a collection of small wooden houses along the shore but is now surrounded by modern buildings. Like most towns in Western Norway, Sogndal has a fine location at the shore of a great fjord. Sogndal village is actually called Sogndalsfjøra but is known simply as Sogndal. Sogndal municipality also includes Kaupanger, Balestrand, Fjærland, and Leikanger/Hermansverk. Hermansverk is the county capital of Sogn og Fjordane.

Sogndal is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in the traditional district of Sogn. The village of Hermansverk is the administrative center of Sogndal municipality. Other villages include Kaupanger, Kjørnes, Fimreite, Nornes, and Fjærland. Sogndal Airport, Haukåsen is located 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) southwest of Kaupanger.

The Norwegian dialect spoken in Sogndal is called sognamål.

In 1917, a farmer in Sogndal (Kato Linde) plowed up the Eggja stone, a gravestone with runic inscriptions important for the history of the Old Norse language.

The 1,258-square-kilometre (486 sq mi) municipality is the 83rd largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Sogndal is the 97th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 11,847. The municipality's population density is 9.6 inhabitants per square kilometer (25/sq mi) and its population has increased by 12.2% over the previous 10-year period.
