Yakutsk

Welcome to Yakutsk!

Yakutsk (Russian: Яку́тск) is the capital city of Yakutia (a Russian autonomous republic the size of India) and one of the oldest and coldest cities of Siberia.

Yakutsk has gained attention as potentially the coldest city in the world, but is worth a visit more for the great natural beauty of its surrounding countryside, unique cryogenic museums, and just for the spirit of adventure in the most remote lands of the world.

Yakutsk (Russian: Якутск, Yakut: Дьокуускай, romanized: Djokuuskay) is the capital city of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located about 450 km (280 mi) south of the Arctic Circle.

Yakutsk, with an average annual temperature of −8 °C (18 °F), winter high temperatures consistently well below 0 °C (32 °F) and a record low of −53 °C (−63 °F), is the coldest city in the world. Yakutsk is also the largest city located in continuous permafrost, the only other large city is Norilsk, also in Siberia. Yakutsk is located in the Central Yakutian Lowland and is a major port on the Lena River. It is served by the Yakutsk Airport as well as the smaller Magan Airport.
